Anthropic built its reputation on privacy, but recent policy changes require attention. Consumer tiers now ask you to choose whether your data trains future models, and a June 2026 privacy policy update added new data collection for identity/age verification (which can include government ID images and biometric facial data) for users who go through that flow. The key differentiator remains: Team and Enterprise tiers never use your data for training, period. With up to 75% nonprofit discounts on Team and Enterprise (minimum 2 seats, now including Premium seats at a discount), Claude offers one of the strongest combinations of privacy protection and affordability for mission-driven organizations. Common Sense Media rates Claude 'Minimal Risk' overall, its best rating among major consumer AI chatbots. FedRAMP High authorized via AWS GovCloud and Claude for Government. Enterprise continues to offer a HIPAA-ready option. Anthropic's flagship model lineup shifted again in mid-2026: Claude Sonnet 5 (June 30, 2026) is now the default for Free and Pro plans, and Claude Opus 4.8 (May 2026) is the current flagship — nonprofits should expect faster model turnover than in prior years.

Claude for Teachers launched: verified individual US K-12 educators get a free year of premium Claude access (including Claude Code and Cowork, plus a curriculum-standards connector) by signing up before June 30, 2027. This is a separate, individual-educator program; Claude for Nonprofits remains the path for schools/districts as organizations.

Claude Sonnet 5 launched and became the new default model for Free and Pro plans (replacing Sonnet 4.6), with a 1M-token context window, adaptive thinking on by default, and introductory API pricing of $2/$10 per million input/output tokens through August 31, 2026 (standard pricing $3/$15 after).
2026-06-09
Anthropic updated its Privacy Policy to add provisions covering optional age/identity verification (which may involve collecting government ID images, photos/video, and biometric facial geometry templates), clarified use of research-study data, and renamed the data-disclosure section to 'Recipients and Third-Party Data Sources' with a disclaimer that Anthropic is not responsible for the practices of third-party services users connect to Claude.

Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 (Anthropic's first public 'Mythos-class' models) launched, then were suspended for all users worldwide on June 12, 2026 under a US Commerce Department export-control order over jailbreak/cybersecurity concerns; Fable 5 was redeployed globally on July 1, 2026 after the order was lifted on June 30. Mythos 5 access remains restricted to a small set of vetted US organizations.

Claude Opus 4.8 launched as Anthropic's new flagship model, priced at $5/$25 per million input/output tokens.
2026-04
Claude for Nonprofits program expanded: self-serve Team plan nonprofit seat cap raised from 20 to 150 seats, and nonprofit-discounted Premium seats introduced (reported ~$40/user/month) where previously only Standard seats received the discount.
2026-02
Anthropic became embroiled in a dispute with the U.S. Department of Defense/Trump administration, which designated Anthropic a 'supply chain risk' (FASCSA) and directed federal agencies to halt use of Anthropic's technology; Anthropic sued, and litigation remains ongoing as of mid-2026. This is a geopolitical/government-contracting matter and does not change Claude's nonprofit-facing policies, but nonprofits relying on government partners or federal grant-funded work should be aware of this context.
2026-03
Claude for Nonprofits minimum seat requirement reduced from 5 to 2 seats for Team plan, making the program accessible to very small organizations ($8/user/month, minimum $16/month).
2026-02-24
Anthropic released Responsible Scaling Policy v3.0, replacing automatic model-pause commitments with a Frontier Safety Roadmap and regular public Risk Reports every 3-6 months.
2026-02-17
Claude Sonnet 4.6 launched with opus-level coding at Sonnet pricing ($3/$15 per MTok). Claude Opus 4.6 (Feb 5) added 1M token context window, Agent Teams, and PowerPoint capabilities.

Privacy Policy updated to add Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy for users in US states with consumer health data laws who integrate third-party health apps with Claude.

Claude for Enterprise HIPAA-ready offering expanded to healthcare providers and payers. Anthropic now provides BAA to enterprise customers and has BAAs with AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Qualifying healthcare nonprofits (FQHCs, CAHs, rural health clinics) now eligible for nonprofit pricing.

Claude for Nonprofits launched with up to 75% discounts on Team and Enterprise plans, plus connectors to Blackbaud, Candid, and Benevity. Team nonprofit rate: $8/user/month.

Major partnerships announced: Accenture (30,000 professionals trained on Claude), Snowflake ($200M deal), and acquisition of Bun JavaScript runtime.
For organizations with 5+ staff
Apply for Claude for Nonprofits immediately. The 75% discount on Team tier gives you enterprise-grade privacy at consumer prices ($8/user/month for Standard seats, minimum 2 seats), and Premium seats (with Claude Code access) are now also discounted at roughly $40/user/month. Verify through Goodstack — the process takes under 5 minutes. Self-serve nonprofit Team pricing now scales up to 150 seats before you need to contact sales.
For organizations with fewer than 5 staff
The nonprofit Team discount requires a minimum of 2 seats ($16/month minimum for Standard seats). For very small teams, the individual Free or Pro tier with training disabled and Incognito mode is an option for non-sensitive tasks. Avoid client data entirely on consumer tiers. Individual K-12 teachers should also check Claude for Teachers (launched July 2026), which offers a full year of free premium access.
For health data or vulnerable populations
Enterprise tier with the HIPAA-ready offering and a BAA is appropriate for healthcare nonprofits; Team tier does not support HIPAA. Since January 2026, qualifying organizations (FQHCs, CAHs, rural health clinics with 501c3 status) are eligible for the nonprofit Enterprise discount. Contact Anthropic sales to confirm eligibility and negotiate pricing.
