Privacy policy (still dated February 12, 2018, unchanged) allows sharing research profiles and project information with potential funders. Terms of Use (April 2023) grant Instrumentl a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable license to use User Submissions to operate Services. May also share de-identified/aggregated data with partners. Vendor now publicly states 'AI features never allow third-party providers to train on your data' (pricing page, 2026).

Standard; SOC 2 Type II in progress

Pricing page (2026) now states data is encrypted at rest and in transit, stored/processed in the U.S., and payments are processed via Stripe with no card data stored by Instrumentl. Instrumentl is undergoing SOC 2 Type II certification, expected May 2026 — not yet complete as of this review. Cyber liability insurance is carried. Dedicated instrumentl.com/security page still returns a 404.

Tier renaming and Full Lifecycle price increase (2026)

Standard became Discover, Pro became Pre-Award, and Advanced became Full Lifecycle — with Full Lifecycle's price rising from $899/mo to $999/mo (~$1,200/year increase). Prices for Discover ($299) and Pre-Award ($499) are unchanged, but all three now carry explicit user caps (3/5/15 respectively) not previously stated as prominently.

SOC 2 Type II certification now publicly disclosed as in-progress

As of 2026, Instrumentl's pricing page discloses it is undergoing SOC 2 Type II certification, expected to complete in May 2026, alongside disclosures on encryption at rest/in transit, U.S.-based data storage/processing, Stripe-only payment handling, and cyber liability insurance. This is a meaningful new disclosure versus the previously undocumented security posture, but the certification was not yet confirmed complete as of this review.

AI learns YOUR proposals, not generic data

Upload past successful proposals, FAQs, and org documents. The AI resurfaces your own winning content and maintains your organizational voice — trained on your organization's library, not a general corpus. Vendor now explicitly states AI features never allow third-party providers to train on customer data.

Privacy policy dated 2018 — still unchanged, now 8+ years old

Has not been updated despite significant AI feature additions (Prospecting Assistant, Claude Connector, Apply, Award Assistant), a $55M funding round, a full tier/pricing overhaul, and a new SOC 2 certification process. Contains broad data-sharing clauses with funders, partners, and potential investors. Terms of Use remain dated April 2023.

No government grant AI features

Apply AI is not designed for state or federal grant applications. Database includes government grant opportunities for tracking (including state grants many databases miss), but AI-assisted writing is for foundation/private grants only.

Human-in-the-loop by design

Instrumentl never submits applications directly. All AI-generated content — from Apply drafts to Award Assistant summaries — requires human review before any action is taken.

Summer 2026: rebuilt Discover experience and Claude Connector

The Discover experience was rebuilt to support conversational refinement of grant matches, transparent match-rationale ('why this result') insights, and automatic ongoing matching. A new Claude Connector lets users browse, save, and annotate Instrumentl grant matches directly inside Claude, with actions syncing back to Instrumentl automatically.

Summer 2026 release: rebuilt 'Instrumentl Discover' experience with conversational match refinement, match-rationale insights, and automatic new-opportunity matching; new Claude Connector for working with grant matches inside Claude; waitlist opened for a free 'Instrumentl Academy' AI course for grant professionals (GPCI/CFRE-aligned).

If your team needs post-award spend tracking or more than 5 users, Full Lifecycle is now $999/mo (~$12,000/year) — up from $899/mo in March 2026. Budget accordingly and confirm current SOC 2 Type II certification status before renewing.

For organizations with fewer than 5 staff

Discover ($299/mo, ~$3,588/year, capped at 3 users) is the entry-level plan; the price itself is unchanged since March 2026 but is now explicitly capped at 3 users. AI writing requires Pre-Award at $499/mo. Consider whether your grant volume and user count justify the cost before committing. 14-day free trial available, no credit card required.

For health data or vulnerable populations

Proceed with caution: Instrumentl now discloses it is pursuing SOC 2 Type II certification (expected May 2026), which is a meaningful improvement over the previously undocumented security posture, but no completed SOC 2 report or HIPAA/BAA documentation has been published as of this review. Health systems and hospitals should request current certification status and a copy of the SOC 2 report (once issued) plus BAA availability directly from Instrumentl's Enterprise team before handling PHI or other sensitive data.
